Donald Hamilton Fraser RA

Of Scottish descent, Donald Hamilton Fraser was born in London. He studied painting at St Martin's School of Art and then in Paris with a French Government Scholarship.

His subject matter is predominantly seascapes, landscapes and dancers, to both of which he admitted a devotion that bordered on the obsessional. He said of the ballet: 'the language of ballet confers sheer physical beauty on a person'.

In all his work his emphasis upon colour and surface texture reflected the traditional affinity between Scottish and French painting. His own early contacts with the post war Ecole de Paris confirmed this for him, providing perhaps the most significant formative influence in the development of his work.

A Royal Academician and Council Member, Honorary Secretary of the Artist's Benevolent Institution and a member of the Fine Arts Commission, his work has exhibited widely throughout the world. He also wrote in various periodicals on painting and ballet and published a book on Paul Gaugin - 'Vision after the Sermon'.

Donald Hamilton Fraser passed away in September 2009.
