Born in Lancashire in 1934 Walter Merga studied Art at the Junior and Senior Art schools of The Royal Technical College Salford and at the Regional College of Art, Manchester, gaining a National Diploma in Design. He was awarded the Royal Manchester Institute of Graphic Arts Bronze Medal.

Walter taught Art for thirty one years and retired from teaching at a sixth form college in 1986.

He had a successful one-man show, in Cheshire and exhibited work in ‘Open’ art exhibitions in the North of England, winning the Prize and Print Trophy at the Derbyshire Open Art Exhibition in 1994. He had a successful exhibition of graphic work at Bad Nauheim, Germany in 1995.

His work is in private collections in Britain, Canada, America, Australia and Germany.
